Rwanda is celebrated in the specialty coffee world. The harvest process involves handpicking, floating cherries to remove defects, pulping, wet fermentation, and sun-drying. Post-harvest, the parchment is sorted, sun-dried, and milled at RWACOF.
RWACOF, with the Kahawatu Foundation, invests in yield improvements, farmer training, quality projects, and sustainability. Their Farmer Development Program offers training, loans, and farm inputs, while a soil health initiative improves soil quality. They support gender equality and women's cooperatives with financial literacy training and alternative income activities.
RWACOF’s Farmer Hub program diversifies income by buying other crops from farmers and selling them at fair prices. They also install solar panels and reduce carbon emissions, ensuring high-quality coffee from cherry to export.
Rwanda's coffee history began in the early 1900s with German missionaries. By the 1970s, coffee was Rwanda’s largest export. The 1994 genocide devastated the industry, but Rwanda’s economy has since recovered. Today, smallholders drive Rwanda's coffee industry, with Arabica Bourbon varieties making up 95% of production.
